USA -Mass - Money Matters: Casino battle

(NECN) - Here's a rundown of the day's developing business headlines, which could impact stock performance:

-Casino showdown

On Monday night, an anti-casino group planned to hold a meeting at the East Boston Social Center.

Some people in the area fear the casino will hurt small businesses.

Suffolk Downs and Ceasars Entertainment officials say a casino would create thousands of jobs and boost the economy.

The meeting was planned for 6 p.m.

-Madoff victims could soon cash in

Victims of the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme could soon be seeing some cash.

The New York Attorney General announced a civil settlement with Hedge Fund Manager J. Ezra Merkin, worth $405 million.

Clients will be paid out over three years, with $5 million going to the state of New York to cover the cost of the settlement.

-Distracted driving crack-down

There is a new push to crack down on distracted driving in Massachusetts.

The Boston Herald reports that several lawmakers are calling for hearings on a total ban of hand-held cellphone use while driving.

As it stands now, only drivers younger than 18 are barred from using their phones behind the wheel.

-Cranberry industry in Mass.

Massachusetts Senators John Kerry (D) and Scott Brown (R) are fighting to protect the state's cranberry industry.

The Boston Globe reports they want cranberry juice cocktail to be exempt from a proposed ban on sugary drinks in the nation's schools.

A 12-ounce bottle of cranberry juice cocktail contains 12 teaspoons of sugar - more than a can of Coke.

Sen. Brown and Sen. Kerry say that's needed to balance out the tartness of the fruit. They also cite the benefits of cranberries - especially when it comes to urinary health.

-Gas keeps dropping

There's more good news at the pump - as gas prices drop 15 cents over a two-week period.

That puts the average cost of gasoline at $3.48 per gallon.

In New England, the most expensive gas is in Connecticut at $3.67.

The cheapest: New Hampshire's average is $3.41 per gallon.
